OPUNAKE MILITARY BALL
PRESENTATION OF DEBUTANTES. MOUNTED REGIMENT'S EVENT. The annual Opunake military ball took place in the Town Hall on Wednesday night and was attended by a large crowd. The hall was decorated with miniature Union Jacks, red, white and blue streamer., greenery and coloured lights, the same scheme of decoration being carried out in the supper room. The stage was decorated with ferns and other greenery and across the front of the stage were the letters Q.A.M.R. and the regimental badge. The supper tables were decorated with spring flowers. Hooker’s orchestra provided the music and Mr. V. Allen was master of ceremonies.
A feature of the evening was the presentation of the debutantes to Colonel T. J. Gibbs. The chaperones were Mesdames R. S. Jenkin, P. Dalrymple, J. Downey and F. Hammond. A sweepstake Monte Carlo was won by Miss N. Heathly and Lieut. S. Hartnell (New Plymouth). Visitors were present from Hawera and New Plymouth, among whom were Capt. F. L. Hunt, N.Z.S.C., and Mrs. Hunt (New Plymouth), Capt. Harford (Tikorangi), Capt. and Mrs. Hastie (Manaia), Lieut. Hartnell (New Plymouth), Lieut. Evans (Okaiawa). During the evening Colonel Gibbs congratulated all those concerned on the success of the evening, mentioning especially Mrs. R. S. Jenkin and Staff Ser-geant-Major J. T. R. Bell, N.Z.P.S., for their organisation. The ladies committee in charge of the supper comprised Mesdames R. S. Jenkin. P. Dalryriiple, J. S. B. Smith, R Smith, F. Hammond, D. Richards, F. Sisley, L. Donnelly, R. Hill, J. Downey and CX H. Marcroft. The debutantes were:—
Miss Jean Forsyth, who wore an anklelength frock of pink silk net, with satin edged frilled godets, white shoes, silk lace mittens, a hair band of pink rosebuds, and carried a posy o White flowers and asparagus fern. Miss Agnes West, who wore a long frock of ivory stilped wind-swept georgette trimmed with white fur, silk lace mittens, white satin shoes, diamante hair band and carried a posy of spring flowers.
Miss Agnes Coombe, who wore a long frock of white shadow lace, a cape of white silk ring velvet and fur, tinsel shoes, a diamante hair band and silk lace mittens. Her posy was of freesias and daphne.
