OPOSSUM TRAPPING SEASON

PROLIFIC TARANAKI RETURNS.

MORE PERMITS AND LICENSES.

A record season for opossum skins in Taranaki is indicated by the returns to date. The season, which began on June 1, will finish on September 1. Already about 3500 skins have been sent to the Dunedin sales by Messrs. L. A. Nolan and Co., NeW Plymouth, and another sale is yet to be held. “We have handled more than ever before,” said a representative ” of the firm yesterday. Most of the skins came from Egmorrt National Park and some from private properties. Their quality' was generally good and there was a great variety of colours. The season seemed to be better than usual, the trappers meeting with, more than ordinary success.

There are a great many more persons trapping this year than last. The Taranaki Acclimatisation Society has so far issued 69 permits entitling owner’s to trap over their own land. Last year the permits for the whole seasc - * numbered 26. The post office has issued 27 licenses, compared with 16 for the whole of last season, while the Egmont National Park Board has issued 15 permits to trap on the mountain reserve, about double th« number for last season.
