ALL BLACKS’ BRILLIANCE DEFEAT OF QUEENSLANDERS THIRTY-ONE TO FOURTEEN HADLEY WINS AT HOOKING LILBURNE AND McLEAN By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10.55 p.m. Brisbane, Aug. 15. The All Blacks to-day registered easily the most impressive performance of their tour by overwhelming a Queensland side by 31 points to 14 on the hard Exhibition Ground. Queensland led by 14 to 11 at halftime, but there was no doubting the real skill of the tourists in the second spell, when they rattled up 20 points in brilliant style to Queensland’s nil. It was a case of gallant Queenslanders diving at the heels of their masters as they flew for the line, usually with many team-mates in support. As an exhibition of superb backing up and short, snappy passes among the forwards the game was a revelation to the Queenslanders. A feature of the match was the success of Hadley in opposition to the test hooker Bonis. The Queenslander was beaten badly for. possession where Queensland was expected to score well. There was a different story to tell in the line-outs, however. There the Queenslander Dore almost monopolised the ball, but the local side did not get the benefit of this owing to the slowness of the half-back, Bennett. The outstanding New Zealander was Lilburne, who played magnificently at full-back. He was safety personified in the first spell. When New Zealand began to forge ahead he ran up to the backs and started many delightful movements. Caughey was the best of the other backs, his two tries being gems. McLean stood out from the magnificent New Zealand - pack, though Hore, Manchester and Mataira all did well. It was a happy relief for Queensland ' that her players “for Saturday’s Australian team, with the exception of Bonis, played splendidly. The winger McLean capped a great display with two brilliant tries. Lewis was very penetrative and Clark was as deadly as ever with tackling. DISTRIBUTION OF SCORES. The scorers were Caughey, Hart and Hore (two tries each), and King and Mataira (one each), with Lilburne landing two goals, one a penalty. Queensland’s- scorers were McLean (two tries), and Bermingham. Doneley kicked a goal and a penalty goal. The only New Zealand try not well-deserved was Mataira’s; he appeared well offside when he gathered the ball. Lilburne was unlucky with his kicks as two fine shots from the touchline hit the posts and bounced infield. The general opinion here now is that New Zealand will go through the rest of the tour without defeat. The team has found its form with a vengeance and Australia will need to do better if it is to win the second test. An interested spectator was the Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, who was introduced to both teams prior to the match. The smile of the manager, Ms. A. J. , Geddes, after the match was bigger than • the New Zealand points margin. He was evidently more than satisfied with the form of the team. “They will do better yet,” he said. If that forecast is correct Australia has been building castles in the air over her Rugby standard, but the weakness of Bennett made a great difference to Queensland, and with Malcolm flying to Brisbane to play on Saturday there may be a different tale. Australia will be much stronger in the forwards, too. Queensland had too many “open” men to-day, and the big New Zealanders simply streamed through the gaps when Queensland tired after its great first half fight. The manager (Mr. Ryan) of the Aus- i tralian test team, said he thought McLean one of the greatest forwards he had ever i seen. He might easily swing the final j test against Australia. 1 A crowd of 5500 (good for a mid-week i game) paid a gate of about £l5O. The teams were:— I r New Zealand: Lilburne; Holder, < Caughey, Hart; Page,. Griffiths; Corner; i Hore, Hadley, Leeson; Barry, King, Manchester, Mataira; McLean. Reserves, 1 Smith, Collins; Mahoney, McKenzie. 1 Queensland: F. Vincent; D. McLean, E. Hayes, F. Amell, H. Cook; L. Lewis; J G. Bennett; J. Ritter, E. Bonis, V. Ber- j mingham; B. Doneley, F. Whyatt, J. ’ Clark, U. Muller, ,V. Dore. ’
