VOGELTOWN DISTRICT MAILS

POSTAL DELIVERY EXTENSION. REQUESTS TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the Vogeltown Progressive Association was held last night. Mr. W. F. Short presided. The chief postmaster, Mr. W. G. Cooper, advised that he was unable to accede to the association’s request that a twicedaily (morning and evening) clearance be made of the letter receiving boxes in the Vogeltown area. A special check made over an extended period showed that the amount posted during the mornings was very small and did not warrant a morning clearance, said Mr. Cooper. Mr. T. Innes said it was natural that the check had not disclosed a large number of postings. The residents did not post in the mornings as the boxes were at present cleared at 10 p.m. The residents had not been advised of the morning clearance. He knew of cases where people had gone to the chief post office to catch the early afternoon mails. He thought another check should be held and the residents advised that the boxes were being cleared in the mornings. Mr. Short is to approach the chief postmaster on the subject.

The chief postmaster advised that a twioe-daily delivery of letters had been established as far as the bus terminus. Tire delivery would be on the main road only, as it was not the practice of the department to deliver to side streets in the outer suburban areas on afternoon deliveries.

It was hard to understand why the department failed to deliver to Smith and Hori Streets, said Mr. Innes. There were more people on these streets than on the additional delivery from the stores to the end of Carrington Road. Mr. J. M. Thomson said there were 11 houses on the extension and nine on Smith Street alone. The delivery was made to Rawhiti Street, but not to Hori Street, although they were very near. The chairman is to investigate the matter and interview the authorities. The town clerk, Mr. F. T. Bellringer, advised that the borough engineer had been authorised to lower and widen two chains of the north side footpath of Rawhiti Street from Carrington Road. , The borough council is to -be asked to complete the whole of the footpath on the north side of Rawhiti Street and not two chains only.

The council’s attention will be drawn to the condition of the footpaths on the east side of Carrington Road from South Street up. Improvements were promised some time ago but as yet nothing had been done, it was stated. Improvements to the footpath on the main either side of Rawhiti Street are to be sought.
