MAORI HISTORY
BISHOP BENNETTS PROPOSAL. The Bishop of Aotea-roa, Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, who addressed the Rotary conference fit Wellington on Tuesday afternoon on “Maori History,” had a motive other than a passing reference to this subject. It is his desire that each of the 22 Rotary Clubs in New Zealand should make an effort to have placed on- record the early Maori history of its district and, that done, the work of collating the history should be undertaken by some authority and published in pamphlet form.
A few weeks ago Bishop Bennett at a meeting in Hastings launched the Hawkes Bay Historic Society. This body is to collect and inquire into the records of the Maori people cf that province; trace the history of tribes, locate the site of their pas, ascertain the reason of place names, go into the genealogy of the. tribal leaders, etc. He emphasises that if this work is not undertaken immediately many of the old Maoris who might be able to supply links in the chain of history may die, and with them may be lost information of historical value.
