ELECTRIC SHOCK

FACTORY MANAGER INJURED. DRILLING MACHINE CONTACT. L Palmerston N., Aug. 3. An unusual accident occurred at the dairy factory at Rongbtea when the manager, Mr. W. Read, had a narrow escape from serious injury. While engaged in repair work in the factory, Mr. Read had occasion to use a hand electric drilling machine. In doing so, he received a severe shock and was thrown with considerable force against a pasteuriser, suffering painful injuries to the head and ear, as well as being partially stunned. Several second elasped before the current could be switched off, when Mr. Read was enabled to realse his hold on the drill, which was attached “to a 240-volt line. Fortunately, a nurse was available at short notice. After receiving first aid, Mr. Reid was taken to Palmerton North, where he received further medical attention.

The floor of the factory is usually wet, and it has been customary for Mr. Read when handling electrical tools at work to lay down pieces of dry board to stand on. The fact that he had taken this precaution no doubt saved his life. It will be several days before he is able to resume his duties.
