UNEMPLOYMENT TAX

ADJUSTMENT THIS SESSION.

CONSIDERATION OF HARDSHIP.

Wellington, Aug. 3.

Some adjustment of the rate of unemployment taxation, as earlier predicted, is likely to be made during the present session of Parliament. The Hon. J. A. Young, acting-Minis-ter of Employment, said to-night that he had been looking into various aspects of the unemployment problem, and he believed that adjusting legislation would have to be introduced later in the session.

When he was asked whether the Government would give some relief in taxation. the Minister said that this phase of the question was by no means escaping attention. He himself had devoted much thought to the matter for some time, and he considered there were certain existing anomalies imposing hardship on some sections of the community. Those would certainly be".investigated with a view to giving a measure’ of relief if this were at all possible Notwithstanding this, the Minister’s first consideration was for the unemployed, and nothing would be done by the Government to jeopardise or weaken the general fund.

' The Minister said he could make no statement in the meantime on the financial position of the Unemployment Fund or the estimated income and expenditure for the coming year. ' The question of amending legislation had been considered by the board at a meeting today.
