MOTORING MAGAZINE

SOUTH TARANAKI SUPPORT, SERVICE OFFICER’S REPORT. The Automobile Association (South Taranaki), decided at the monthly meeting of the executive at Hawera on Friday night to support the establishment of a national motoring magazine on similar lines to English publications. The association’s share in the initial cost will be £5O, and for the first few months there will be a postage charge to the association for the distribution of the magazine to members. The magazine, said the secretary, Mr. W. G. Walkley, might in time become a free service, giving details of automobile association work in New Zealand. Mr. W. A. O’Callaghan pointed out that the Auckland association for some years had had a three-monthly bulletin service arid the suggestion had been made that with the start of the magazine Auckland’s bulletin service could be issued as a supplement to the magazine. If the motion were carried, it would be a subject for discussion at the annual meeting of the North Island Motor Union. Even if the annual meeting decided in favour of the magazine, it would be some months before the magazine could be issued. The motion was earned. It was decided that the service officer should make a tour of the Urewera district at the time of the annual meeting at -Napier to procure first-hand information 'on the roads in the district. Consideration was given to a suggestion that some regulations be imposed on lorry drivers carrying large loads of lambs dr bobby calves in such a manner that it was impossible for them to see behind. “Often,” said one member, “I have travelled for miles and miles behind a lorry without having a chance to get past, because the lorries had no rear mirrors.” It was pointed out that tire regulations definitely provided for a clear view to the rear and it was decided to send a remit /to the annual conference of the North Island Motor Union.

The service officer (Mr. S. J. McKee) reported that he had given service on the road to seven members and information on the condition of various roads to 18. He had made a survey of the road from Kaponga to Eltham for new signs and poles, and the work was being done by a signwriter. Signs would be ready for erection in about a fortnight.

As requested he made a survey of road for new signposting from Stratford to the end; of Tangarakau Gorge and the approximate cost of erecting modern signs would be £145. New signs at Huinga and also on the Opunake Road, Awatuna, had been erected. Those present at the meeting were Mr. G. A. Carter (chairman), Dr. W. T. Simmops, Messrs W. 0. Williams, S. C. Tonks, A. McL’Dowie, R. H. Leece, G. H. P. Fitzgerald, T. B. Crump, G. J. Bayley, A. Betts, J. A. Duffill, L. J. Furrie, C. R. Honeyfield, W. A. O’Callaghan. ROAD CYCLING AT PATEA. RESULT OF SATURDAY FIXTURE.
