DOLLFUSS ASSASSINATED
AUSTRIAN NAZIS’ SUDDEN ATTACK CHANCELLERY STORMED BY REBELS GOVERNMENT REGAINS CONTROL T),R. ENGELBERT DOLLFUSS, Austrian Chancellor, was assassinated by a band of Nazi rebels who stormed the Chancellery and temporarily imprisoned members of the Cabinet. The incident has caused grave anxiety in many parts of Europe. Loyal troops surrounded the Chancellery. From a balcony the Nazis were offered free pardon and safe conduct to Germany if they released the imprisoned Cabinet, conditionally on the safety of the Cabinet being guaranteed. This was apparently accepted, but the promise of safe conduct to Germany was withdrawn when it was learned that the Nazis had shot Dr. o uss. The rebels were then imprisoned. The Government apparently has control of the situation. President Mikla has appointed Dr. Schuschnigg Chancellor to succeed Dr. Dollfuss. Prince Starhemberg, leader of the Government Heimwehr troops, fled to Italy, and from Venice is directing the mobilisation of 300,000 home defence forces.
