METHODS OF DEPARTMENT CRITICISM FROM HASTINGS. INSISTENCE ON PROGRAMME. COUNCIL RESENTS ATTITUDE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night Criticism of the Department of Internal Affairs in associating itself to the extent it had in the t ir of Cie avitrix Miss Jean Batten was voiced by members of the Hastings Borough Council tonight. It was made clear, however, that it was not intended to belittle Miss Batten or her performance, but it was the methods adopted by the department that evoked the criticism. A programme forwarded by the de- r partment was before the council in connection with Miss Batten’s visit to Hastings. The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, explained that Miss Batten would be accompanied by two Government planes. She was under contract to appear at certain theatres. “We can only adopt the proposals, for I understand the department will not agree to any changes,” Mr. Maddison said. Councillors opposed the. department arranging the programme and insisting on its adoption.
