VICTORIAN SETTLERS

COMPENSATION FUND. BRITISH GOVERNMENT AID. London, July 18. In the House of Commons the Dominions Secretary, Mr. J. H. Thomas, said that Britain had contributed £lO,OOO on March 22 toward the Victorian fund to assist in paying the pressing debts of 292 settlers. He hoped the majority of the migrants would remain in Australia, and utilise the compensation to secure a fresh start in life. About 90 had returned to Britain. The British Government, in cases where further assistance was considered necessary for the purpose of making a fresh start, had decided to make an ex gratia payment, not exceeding half the minimum cost of passages home for a settler and dependents, also the actual exchange loss on transferred compensation. These concessions would cost £17,000, the total cost of all assistance being about £30,000.
