WORLD’S BEST SPA
VALUE OF ROTORUA.
AMERICAN DOCTOR’S PRAISE. “As a natural spa, Rotorua is unequalled in any part of the.world,” said Dr. H. Garcelon, of Arrowhead Springs, California, who returned to Auckland on Tuesday after a short tour of the North Island. “Famous spas in Europe and America have two or three different waters. Rotorua has them all.” Dr. r Garcelon is in charge of the metabological clinic .at Arrowhead Springs,' the largest spa in the -west, of the United* States,, where ,treatment■ is available in mineral mud baths,'■ mineral springs and steam caves. There is a variety of sulphur and arsenical waters.* “As I say, Rotorua has everything,” Dr. Garcelon continued. “Probably the nearest approach to it as a spa is Piscanie, in Hungary. There is even a natural water similar to the famous Nauheim bath in Germany—one water which makes Nauheim a leading spa for heart cases. The Rachel, too, is a most stimulating bath and should be of great advantage in dealing with capes of arthritis. • ' . ' - ’ ■> 2;''X' “The work in hydrotherapy at Rotorua is excellent, and, although rome of the facilities for specialised treatment may be absent, the spa is well abreast of modern developments in balneology. Dr. J. D. Campbell Duncan is recognised as being one of the most capable balneologists in the world. . “One hears of Rotorua as a summer tourist resort,’ with its thermal activity and native life, but one hears comparatively little of its unique attractions as a health resort and spa. This is a defect Jn publicity. Continental spas, which have not half the attributes of Rotorua, find that extensive advertising pays them over and over again. Rotorua should not only as..a holiday resort, but as the greatest spa in the world.” ' , . ' ' / ■ Dr. Garcelon added • that- ■if .Rotorua was to retain its popularity with visitors from abroad, efforts would have to be made to improve the hotel accommodation in some respects. Americans, particularly, were used to having their rooms centrally heated during the winter, and also expected private bathrooms in hotels. “Your Tourist Department should warn visitors that Rotorua, in winter can be very cold,” he added. Dr. Garcelon, who is accompanied by Mrs. Garcelon, will leave on his return to San Francisco by the Mariposa on Saturday. -
