NGAERE SCHOOL CONCERT
CHILDREN’S AND ADULTS’ ITEMS. WELL VARIED PROGRAMME. A fine array of items by children and adults was presented to a large audience at the Ngaere Hall on Fridaynight and as a result the school funds will benefit by a substantial amount. There was a pleasing variety about the nature of the items, all of which were worthy of the general excellence of the programme. Every member was encored and the children’s concerted items impressed by the polished way the pupils discharged their parts, a reflection on the training of the teachers, Mr. G. C. Harre and Miss K. Grant. During the evening the Ngaere section of the Boy Scouts • gave valuable assistance to the committee. At the conclusion the chairman of the committee (Mr. J. H. Thomas) thanked Mr. Harre for having arranged the programme. He expressed appreciation of the action of Mr. Naim and his party jin travelling from Huiroa and thanked 'the other artists. The committee was also deeply indebted to those who assisted and the parents who realised the difficulties the committee faced. A dance followed supper, music being played by Mrs. R. . Watkins, Misses Stockman and Nairn, and Mr. T. Walsh. Mr. W. White was master of ceremonies. The programme comprised: Chorus, “The Golden Vanity,” school children; dance, “The Sailor’s Hornpipe,” Miss ■Doreen Naim; recitation, Miss Nancy Kent; song, Mrs. J. Rankin; violin duet, Mr. G. C. Harre and Master .Harre; dialogue, “There’s No Place Like Home,” Misses D. Coleman, D. Harre and M. McDonald; recitation, Miss Phyllis Spencer; sword dance, Master S. Nairn; elocution, Miss Kent; “Slumber Song,” school choir; pianoforte duet, Miss Mary Loveridge and Charlie Walsh; song, Miss E. Mehrtens; dance duo, “The Irish Jig,” Miss Doreen and Master S. Naim; recitation, Miss Nancy Kent; folk dance, senior girls; selection on pipes, Stewart Nairn; dance, “Dancing Doll,” Master Stewart Naim; chorus, “Lisette,” school children. KAHOURI BRIDGE PARTY. FLAG FIVE HUNDRED EVENING. There was a. good attendance at the fortnightly flag five hundred party at Kahouri Bridge on Tuesday night. Fifteen tables were occupied, the winning players being Miss Bellshaw, Miss H. Bellshaw, Mr. Brenner and Mr. H. Franklin. Afterwards dancing was enjoyed to music played by Mr. Brenner, Miss Bellshaw and Mrs. Wilkes. Mr. Crowe was master of ceremonies. PLAZA, STRATFORD. “I Cover the Waterfront,” the delightfully unusual attraction which is ’the current picture at the Plaza Theatre, is truly a picture that should not be missed. Ben Lyon, Claudette Colbert and Ernest Torrence ably portray the principal roles, and their excellent acting in this picture must be appreciated and accepted by the most ardent critic. How an impetuous prank of a little motion picture extra girl was turned into a sensational front page story, hurling her into fame and stardom overnight, is deftly told in the gay and thrilling comedy-drama, “The Countess of Monte Cristo,” which will commence at the Plaza to-morrow, with Fay Wray and Paul Lukas in the leading roles. Miss Wray, in the title part, is the little\ actress who tires of just being “atmosphere” and when the opportunity presents itself she dares to drive out of scene at the studio with an expensive car and coat. Going to an exclusive winter resort she registers as the “Countess of Monte Cristo,” and from there on things begin to happen to her. An excellent cast surrounds Miss Wray and Lukas, who enacts the part of the elusive and gentlemanly mannered thief.
