WOO MILES SHELTER BELT
BIG UNITED STATES PROJECT.
75,000,000 DOLLAR TREE PLANTING.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7.30 p.m. Washington, July 21. An executive order has been issued authorising a vast land preserving programme. This is expected to materially lessen the drought menace in the middle western States. An allocation of 15,060,000 has been made.
The preliminary work of planting a belt of trees 100 miles wide and 1000 miles long stretching from Canada to north-western Texas is expected to break the dry dust winds which cause so much damage and also to preserve much land moisture. The project will require ten years and cost 75,000,000 dollars. The belt will cross the States of Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma and go far into Texas. It will cover about 64,000,000 acres. Over 3,000,000 tree will have to be planted.
