MANAIA PLAYS OPUNAKE
FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL. INTER-SCHOOL TROPHY CONTEST. The first trophy competition for this season between' fhe. Opunake District High School pupils and Manaia High School was played at Opunake on Friday; Manaia won the football game and Opunake the basketball. The football teams were:—
Manaia: V. Sole, A. Andrews, G. Innes, A. Geoorge, C. Hobday (capt.), T. Moses, A. McLeod, T. Nelson, P. Willis, E. Allan, B. Willis, F. Anderson, M. Millar, B. Walsh, P. Rei. Opunake: D. Humphries, (capt.), V. Elgar, W. Lambie, F. Webb, R. Clegg, S. Hohaia, R. Baylis, R. Walker, A. Armstrong, G. Campbell, T. Clouston, C. Wells, M. Ross, R. Sharrock, G. Byars, C. Farquhar replaced Sharrock injured.
Manama in the first spell dominated the play and scored 14 points. In the second spell Opunake made the game more interesting. Manaia scored two tries, (one converted) towards the. close of the game, leaving the score: Manaia 22, Opunake 0. Mr. A. Elgar refereed. Basketball teams were:—
Opunake: Peggy Smith (capt.), Billie Callandar, Joyce Priest, Edith Ashworth, Dorothy' Smith, Joan Hickey, Billie Callandar, Eunice Raynor, Peggy Smith, Betty Oliver, Joan Allan. Manaia: Betty Evetts (capt.), Jean Mitchell, Betty Evetts, Joan Evans, Nancy Sproull, Phyllis Spooner, Joan Bayliss, Nellie Hemsly, Jean Mitchell, Loma Joyce, Dulcie Gunderson. The final score was: Opunake 12, Manaia 5. The referee was Miss A. S. McCrae. The visitors were entertained to afternoon tea.
