ASSISTANCE OF EX-SOLDIERS

NATIONAL WAR FUNDS COUNCIL.

PRESENT POSITION OF ACCOUNTS.

The annual meeting of the National War Funds Council decided .to-day to authorise the executive to expend up to £15,000 in assistance of unemployed exsoldiers. It was also resolved that further efforts be made to secure a grant from the British Legion. The accounts showed a balance of £136,735 7s lOd as at March 31 last, including trust accounts. The income and expenditure account disclosed that expenditure exceeded income by £12.426 2s 2d. Tire trust accounts showed an increase of £535 3s 6d, thus leaving a net excess of expenditure of £11,890 17s Bd. Two bequests were reported, £556 17s 6d under the wil' of Mr. Frederick Martin, Christchurch, ror blind soldiers, and £4OO under the will of Miss Simmonds, Thames, for wounded and disabled soldiers of New Zealand. The relief of the year totalled £16,370, an increase of £2OOO over the previous year. Assistance was rendered to Imperial, Australian and Canadian men as well as ex-members of the N.Z.E.F. ~
