DOMINION SCHOOL BOOKS
DIRECT PURCHASE FROM LONDON. OPPOSITION FROM BOOKSELLERS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Action is being considered by the New Zealand Booksellers’ Association to prevent schools from buying text books direct from London under wholesale agreements, according to a statement by the principal of the Auckland Seddon Memorial Technical College, Mr. G. J. Park, at a meeting of the college board.
“I have been informed there is a danger of the Booksellers’ Association placing obstacles in the way of schools purchasing books direct from London,” said Mr. Park. “It is a regrettable situation, for the money saved by the purchase of books in this manner is a benefit to parents, and makes technical education available to children who otherwise might not be able to enjoy its benefits.” The board decided to submit the following remit to the Technical Education Association conference to be held at Wellington next month: That in order to reduce the cost of text books for our students and to help local industry in the present time of stress the conference consider whether a scheme for the local publication of the most commonly used text books can be arranged in New Zealand.
