“This mill for sale, or given in exchange for a broody hen,” is a notice on a derelict mill in South Wales, according to the Rev. Herbert Leggate, a visiting Toe H padre from England, who addressed the Auckland Rotary Club on Monday. He said the notice was illustrative of the irrepressible cheerfulness of the people in spite of the difficulties they had to face. The winter in Central Otago, which is spoken of by local residents as the hardest experienced for 30 years, had an unfortunate effect on a Dunedin man in camp at Lauder. The man arrived home suffering from frost-bitten fingers, two on one hand and four on the other. He was immediately attended by a doctor and it is hoped that his fingers will be saved. Scanlan’s Melbourne Comer will be the meeting-place to-day for hundreds of shoppers eager to participate in the bargains just advertised. A general clean-up of all oddments and remnants is being made in all departments and those in need of general drapery, hosiery and gloves and coats and frocks can make great savings.* -
