SETTLEMENT OF ASSYRIANS
SECURITY AND RELIEF QUESTION. INVESTIGATIONS BY THE LEAGUE. British Wireless. Rugby, July 16. In reply to a parliamentary question by Lord Cecil, Sir John Simon, Foreign Secretary, said the responsibility for providing for the security and relief of Assyrians in Iraq rested with the Iraq Government, . hich x..,d undertaken to keep the Assyrian committee of the League of Nations Council informed of the measure taken by it. He understood the Iraq Government had now set up a committee, including certain of their officials of British nationality, to deal with the whole question o. relief and maintenance of Assyrianspending a decision on their ultimate future. Sir John added that the Assyrian committee of the League was still actively investigating the feasibility of arranging for resettlement of Assyrians outside Iraq, and recently addressed an appeal to a number of Governments inviting them to reconsider the possibility of accepting Assyrians in any of the territories under their control. The United Kingdom Government, which was among the Governments approached, was giving the matter earnest attention.
