HAWERA TRACK NOTES

WORK ON THURSDAY MORNING. HUNT CANDIDATES GALLOP. Track work at Hawera on Thursday morning was rather more interesting than it has been for some time, as several prospective candidates for the approaching combined Hunt fixture were galloped. They were sent on the trial grass, which was fairly heavy after the recent wet weather, and consequently the tunes recorded were slower than usual. Four trials were staged, each being over three furlongs. Silver Wings (Coyle) obtained a slight advantage over Carfex (Cole) at the commencement of three furlongs, but the latter quickly made up the leeway and came home very solidly to be threequarters of a length clear of his companion at the post in 38s. Carfex is hitting out very freely again and appears all the better for his recent rest. This son of Nigger Minstrel usually races well when fresh and should give, an excellent account of himself at New Plymouth. It is a course too which he has previously shown a decided liking, having won at each of his three starts there. Silver Wings is coming to hand well and promises to be a very useful filly next season. However, she gives tire impression that she will be more at home on firm tracks than when the going is holding; therefore the half-sister to Inflation may not be seen at her best until the late spring or summer.

Friesland (Coyle) pleased by the manner in which he disposed of Colossal (Grindley), finishing a length to the good to occupy 38s. for three furlongs. Friesland worked very attractively to register his best track effort to date. The Australian-bred gelding now presents a much improved appearance, having fined down into a very racy type. Provided he continues to make satisfactory progress, Friesland should do good service this season for owner-trainer O. Cox. Colossal went quite well, as he was conceding his companion a good deal of weight. Arouse (Cole) and Benedictine (Feasey) were on terms after covering three furlongs in 39 T-ss. Neither horse was asked to do its best and both could have improved slightly on this time had it been required. Both are getting through everything required of them in good style. Rose Ray (Coyle) and Taitoru (Grindley) were also associated over three furlongs, being together when the post was reached in 38Vis. Rose Ray hit out boldly, her showing indicating that after she has had a little more galloping she will sprint fast. From now on she should improve steadily. Although Taitoru had much the worse of the weights he did not seem to stride along quite as freely as usual.

Useful pace work tasks were apportioned to a big string of horses on either the oval, hurdle track or sand track. Among those worked were Sandlark, Silk Sox, Rollovant, Radiant Star, Stanchion, Oriel, Round, Table, Kaitetemai, The Tiger, Golden Hair, Sylvanus, Aga Khan, Diagano, Autumn Leaf, Richfield, Eara, Link Divine, Fairfax, Exquisite, Golden Promise, One Whetu, Gold Gleam, Waitaunaha, St. Clara, Haiwast Moon, Acre—Rapt colt, Colossus—Lady Eglentine colt, Colossus—Miss Gallant colt, (Nigger Minstrel—Look Out filly, Lord ’Quex—Zarene colt, Mint Leaf—Red Gleam gelding, Mint Leaf —Gold Morn filly, Diacquenod—Moorefield filly, and Kiosk-Eka filly. Both weather and track conditions were extremely wintry on Tuesday, and as a result there was only one gallop. Kaiteremai (Conway) and Benedictine (Shield) were together throughout three furlongs on the trial grass in 40 I ,£s. Kaiteremai bore out the . good form he showed in a previous effort. He undoubtedly has pace well above that usually possessed by the average hunter. An interesting piece of work was performed on Saturday morning by the rising two-year-old Fairfax (Vaughan) and Link Divine (Cole), who were actually galloped for the first time. They jumped away from the two furlongs peg with Link Divine holding a slight advantage, and although Fairfax moved very resolutely she was still a trifle behind at the winning post in 25’/2S. —a smart effort. Both youngsters hit out impressively and it seems that in this pair trainer J. Brown has a couple of youngsters likely to hold their own against the best of their age during the new season.
