FLOOD AFTERMATH
PASTURES IN THE NORTH.
SERIOUS EFFECT ON DAIRYING.
Whangarei, June 23.
The flood waters in the recently inundated low areas are slowly receding, but the continuation of showery weather is keeping the streams in a swollen condition.
Discussing the effects of the flood, a dairy company director stated that in one district at least three farmers were compelled to take all their stock off their farms even to the pigs, and in one instance the poultry. The stock was now being put back, but the position for these farmers for the remainder of. the winter will be very hard. The floods have left deposits of silt in varying degrees of thickness, he said, and as the grass was short at this time of the year, it would be some weeks before the areas affected were of any great benefit to the stock. This was the position generally in all those areas where the floods had covered the pastures, in most instances for approximately three days. It would make a very heavy drain on winter feed for stock, especially dairy cows, to be kept up to reasonable condition.
The loss of stock as a result of . the floods is much less than originally anticipated, although in many instances farmers have not yet fully ascertained the position. . • CI-
