HOCKEY COMPETITIONS
WOMEN’S THURSDAY DIVISION. Both competitions in which New Plymouth players are taking part have reached an interesting stage. In the Thursday division the New Plymouth team has gone through the first round without a defeat. Its game with Inglewood to-day should prove fast and interesting. Should the New Plymouth team win this match, its chances of winning the Thursday division are very bright. The team will need to be “on its toes” to-day when it meets the steadily improving Inglewood team. Its last lines of defence, H. Trass and ’ K. Berry (full-backs), and M. Lash (goal), are very solid. The half line, V. Huston, D. Jones, and H. Frewin, is a hardworking trio, particularly D. Jones at centre-half. Improvement could be shown by the wing-halves in their backing up of their forward line. The forwards, S. Barron, S. Brough, J. Hutchison, H. Simpson and D. Morton, have the right idea of combination, but the movements could be made faster by directing the passes slightly farther ahead than is the tendency at present. Gilmour Cup.
Last Saturday’s games in the Gilmour Cup competition were very interesting. Playing at Urenui Kiwi’s defeated Urenui by five goals to three after a very interesting game. At New Plymouth Tuis was beaten by Star by seven goals to three after a hard, fast game. The enthusiasm shown by z the players in the competition is very satisfying to those in charge, and next season women’s hockey should be very strong at New Plymouth.
The games set down for next Saturday are: Urenui v. Tuis; Kiwis v. City. Both games will be played at New Plymouth. Star will have a bye.
