As a result of the recent disturbances at Olympia, where Fascists and Communists clashed, a deputation from the National Joint Council, representing all sections of the Labour movement, warned Sir John Gilmour, Home Secretary, that unless the Government took steps to protect the citizens from Blackshirt assaults the Labour movement would adopt its own measures to safeguard itself.
Sir- John Gilmour declared that the Government would not tolerate disorder from any quarter and was reviewing the whole legal position regarding the preservation of order at public meetings. The Government was also ascertaining whether it was legal to form uniformed bands and equip and drill them as a political force.
