FAREWELL TO LAURENSON

DEPARTURE FOR MORRINSVILLE.

TRIBUTE TO ORGANISING WORKS.

Many friends of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Laurenson and Miss Jean Laurenson met at Hawera on Tuesday to bid farewell to the family, who are to leave for Morrinsville at the end of the week. Mr. D. G. Smart, at an interval in the social and dance, which form the function took, referred to Mrs. Laurenson’s work as an organiser. Mr. Laurensbn was popular in the district, and Mr. Smart paid a tribute to his reputation for fair dealing and geniality. Mr. E. A. Washer, on behalf of the Egmont A. and P. Association, said Mr. Laurenson had been a great worker for the association and would be missed. Mr. J. Fraser, Mr. W. McDonald (Kaupokonui), Mr. D. Wards (Okaiawa) and Mrs. W. Nicholson, also regretted the departure of the guests and wished them good luck. The Mayor of Hawera, Mr. J. E. Campbell, in making a presentation, paid a tribute to the Laurensons’ good citizenship, and hoped they would return some day to Hawera, of which town he hoped they would retain pleasant memories. Mr. Campbell presented Mrs. Laurenson with a dinner set, Mr. Laurenson with an armchair and chiming clock, and Miss Laurenson with a cup, saucer and plate. Mr. W. G. Simpson spoke humorously of Mr. Laurenson’s work in connection with the Hawera Pipe Band, and presented him with a set of miniature bagpipes. Mr. Laurenson in reply said they would never forget the kindness shown them at Hawera. Anything done by the family to help the town had been an enjoyable task, and while in MorrinsviUe they would continue to take' an interest in the Scottish Society, Pipe Band and A. and P. Association matters.

During the evening the following programme was given: Songs, Miss M. MacRae and Messrs C. Lamb and Simpson; playette, Mrs. Twaddle and Mr. Simpson. The accompaniments were played by Miss G. Purser and Mr. A. MacRae. Dance music was provided by Mrs. Attrill. SURPRISE PARTY AT AUROA. MR. AND MRS. BRIAN BRADFORD. A large surprise party visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bradford last Thursday evening to welcome home Mr. and Mrs. Brian Bradford from their honeymoon. Visitors were present from as far away as Whenuakura and Patea. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. Ted Hurley, the parents of the bride, Whenuakura, and. Mr. Joe Crawford, Patea. The evening was happily spent with dancing on the lawn, lit up by electric light, and singing and music. The dance music was supplied by Misses Una West , and Margaret Lilley, while the accompaniments were played by Mrs. Brian Bradford and Mr. Joe Crawford. A number of vocal items were given by Mr. Joe Crawford, outstanding ones being “Hail Caledonia,” “Ave Maria,” “Rose of Tralee” and “Little Bit of Heaven.” Mr. Schwieters sang “My Old Shako,” and Mr. W. B. Bradford recited “The Bush Christening.” Mr. J. J. O’Dea also sang. Mr. Schwieters presented Mr. and Mrs. Brian Bradford with a carpet square. He spoke highly of the qualities of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bradford and the whole Bradford family as neighbours and citizens. Best wishes of all were extended to the bride and bridegroom for their future happiness. Mr. Brian Bradford replied. Mr. Laurie West was master of ceremonies. Mr. and Mrs. Desmond McCarthy, Harleyville, visited Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Bradford last week. Miss Eileen O’Dea is touring the Waikato with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kissick. Mr. Walter Hodges is spending a holiday with Mr. Robert Ord. Mr. Walter Churchill is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Lyndon. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. Phillips, Awatuna, died at the Kaponga hospital on Wednesday morning. Mrs. Phillips, who had been in bad health for some time, lived for many years at Wanganui. Her first husband, Mr. James, died at Auroa. Mr. and Mrs. Phillips and their family are well known throughout Taranaki. GENERAL ITEMS. Special W.D.F.U. Prize. The award for the unique article in 'the W.D.F.U. exhibition at the Hawera winter show last week went to the community chest in the Mokoia-Whakamara display. Air Mail. When Mr. C. T. P. Ulm flies the Tasman again he will be carrying in the mail consignment from New Zealand 70 letters from Hawera and other districts of South Taranaki.. The mail has been dispatched to Ninety Mile Beach from which Mr. Ulm will take off in the Faith in Australia. Several of the letters are for the forthcoming Australia-Papua-New Guinea flight to be made by Mr. Ulm after his return to Australia. Visit by Miss Jean Batten. Although it is by no means definite, there is a possibility that Miss Jean Batten will visit Hawera in the course of her New Zealand tour. An invitation has been extended to the aviatrix by Dr. W. F. Buist, president of the Hawera Aero Club, and a reply that she hoped to visit Hawera was received. Orchestral Society Concert. The accompaniste for the orchestra at the Hawera Orchestral Society’s concert ; on Tuesday night was Miss Rodgers, who I also accompanied Mr. Gordon Sayers in I his comet solo. The accompaniste for the other artists was Miss Kathleen Fairhall. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS; A children’s fancy dress ball will be held in the Matapu hall to-morrow from 7.30 to 9.30 p.m., with an adults’ dance to follow. Smith and Trim, Ltd., advertise particulars of mart sales at Hawera to-day of fruit, including prime hothouse tomatoes and produce at 11 a.m., and A.J.S. motor-cycle, handy small office desk, 50 high-back dining chairs and a good assortment of household furniture and sundries at 1.30 p.m.
