Chilled Beef Shipments.
The success that attended the two experimental shipments of chilled beef forwarded by Messrs T. Borthwick and Sons, from their Waingawa works has encouraged that firm to persevere still further with the development of that trade, says an exchange. The first shipment in January of last year comprising 330 hind-quarters and 270 fore-quarters, while not a commercial success, paved the way for the success of the second shipment, comprising 520 hind-quarters. That realised ltd per pound more than frozen beef, and was stated in a London cable to be the best trial shipment ever made by Australia or New Zealand. Practically all the beef was drawn from the Wairarapa, and the killing and chilling process was carried out at Waingawa. The March shipment, which left Wellington by the new motor vessel, Port Chalmers, specially fitted for the trade, and now on her maiden voyage, consisted of 1200 hind-quarters, almost all drawn from Wairarapa herds. Only superior quality should be sent forward, if this Dominion’s product is to secure a profitable footing on the markets at Home. It is .essential that the cattle be young, not more than 21 years, prime, and weighing from 650 to 7501 b. The individual hind-quarters should average about 160 to 1801 b. There is little or no demand at Home for chilled fore-quarters.
