OPUNAKE DISTRICT NEWS
FUNERAL OF MRS. KIRKWOOD. The funeral of Mrs. Kirkwood on Sunday was a big one. An old pioneer of the early settlement of Oanui, she was well known in the district. She came with the first Canterbury settlers to the Waimate Plains. Later with her first husband, the late Mr. Gilmer, she settled on a bush farm on the Arawhata Road. The same land is now farmed by the eldest son, Joseph. After a long period of pioneering work her husband died, and some years later she married' the late Mr. Kirkwood, and retired to Opunake. Her second husband predeceased her by about three years. The sons and daughters that survive her are Joseph, Robert and Samuel Gilmer, Mesdames Shirley, Shultz and Vincent. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. A. Penn. The pall-bearers were Messrs. S. M. Coombe, M. Barrett, J. Litchwark, R. Shultz, G. Vincent and N. Simpson. A pleasing ceremony took place at the Girl Guide parade on Friday evening. Guide Eunice Raynor presented 16 little girls to Mrs. T. N. Watt, district commissioner, to be enrolled as Brownies. The following little girls made the Brownie promise: Marie Hughson, Shirley Mar croft, Elaine Julian, Elva Clouston, Audrey Pope, Moira Hickman, Joy Sinclair, Noleen Clare, Gwen Taylor, Dawn Mitchell, Betty McKenzie, Elaine Hughson, Mollie Morris, Margaret Laing and Betty Byars. Several parents were present to see the enrolment. The euchre party held in St. Patrick’s Hall on Friday night in aid of Catholic Church funds was attended by over 100 players, every table being filled. The prizes were won by: Ladies, Mrs. J. Hickey 1, Mrs. Roy Juliar 2, Mrs. G. Parsons consolation; men, Mr. J. Young 1, Mrs. Hall (playing as a man) 2, Mr. Bert Mann consolation. Supper was provided by the hostesses, Mesdames J. A. Stevenson and J. Reid.
