HAWERA WINTER SHOW

With the official “opening” to-day by the Minister of Employment, the Hon. A, Hamilton, the South Taranaki Winter Show will come into its stride once more. There has been evidence already that the value and purport of the show is being fully recognised, and that the exhibition will receive full support from the whole of the province. It was a happy idea to associate the “See New Zealand First” campaign with the Winter Show. With the improved transport services now available the opportunities for all who would know thoroughly their own country are wider than ever. The inauguration of an appeal to New Zealanders to know at first-hand the wonderful scenic assets they possess is particularly fitting for association with an exhibition that has a wider outlook than that of the parish or the district in which it is held. The entries made in the Hawera winter show are the best evidence that its importance and interest are recognised outside that town and, indeed, in a larger sphere than that of the province of Taranaki. The winter shows in Taranaki are largely holiday functions, except for those who have the work of organising them, and they have a great attraction on that account. There is much that the farmer and the townsman may learn from the experiences, the successes and the failures of exhibitors, but the lesson is learned in a happy atmosphere, and there are less serious attractions available. The shows themselves are a triumph of well-directed co-operation in which there is no such thing as distinction between town and country interests. They are identical, and upon recognition of this fact depends the successful organisation of exhibitions like the winter show, or, indeed, success in matters of much graver import. However, it' is for amusement and entertainment as well as instruction that the public will visit the Hawera show. There is ample evidence that full provision has been made to suit all needs.
