POPULAR MEMBER FAREWELLED. GENERAL NEWS OF DISTRICT. The members of the St. Mark s Anglican guild had a, flag five hundred at the Parish hall on Friday evening to honour Mrs. J. M. Doyle, a guild member, who is shortly leaving the district. The evening was spent with cards and dancing. Prizes for the five hundred were won by Mesdames .Lewis Thurston, A. W. Anderson and Dawson, and were presented by Mr. F. W. Fallows, vicar’s warden. At supper opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mrs. Doyle by Mrs. T. T. Jones, who said Mrs. Doyle had been a valued member of the guild. She extended to Mrs. Doyle best wishes for her future health and prosperity.’<Mr. J., M. Doyle responded. After supper dancing was indulged in to music by Mrs. Evans. Mesdames Thurston and Lewis were the hostesses. Mr. Chas. Tonkin and family, Uruti, who’lived at Kaponga for a number of years, have taken over a farm at Denbigh Road, Stratford. Work under the No. 5 scheme for this week has been allotted to six B and three C class workers. The certifying officer has received advice that applications can be taken for working boots for those unemployed workers who have the necessary qualifications. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Doyle, Rowan Road, are shortly leaving for Uruti, where Mr. Doyle has taken over a farm. Mr. Doyle has been farming on the Rowan Road for some years and was a, well-known stock breeder. Mr. H. Leabourn senr. and Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Leabourn, Tekopuru, who are on an extended motor tour of the North Island, are at present visiting Kaponga. They are the guests of Mr. Leabourn’s son, Mr. C. H. Leabourn, Eltham Road. Before the Kaponga Cycle Clubs road race on Saturday afternoon a- race was organised for boy cyclists. The course was three times round the stock road block, and there was a good number of starters. Tire race was very popular with the youthful population of the town, who gathered at the starting post in large numbers, offering much advice to the competitors as they completed 'each lap. The race . was won by —. Chamberlain, with Brian Abbott second and Tom Abbott third. Prizes for the race were subscribed by the bystanders.
hawera high school board. WORK OF AGRICULTURAL CLASS. The monthly meeting of the Hawera High School Board was held last night, Mr. R. S. Sage presiding. The headmaster, Mr. J. Dash, was present. The principal reported that the boys , of the agricultural division had visited ; the farm of Mr. H. J. Finlay,, where 1 they were shown the salient features of i a well-organised milking plant’ and given . a practical lesson on ensilage. A visit . I was paid to Tokaora, wherp a demon- . [ stration on Ayrshires was given by Mr. [* F. Mills. These two visits had in the , i practical nature of the instruction set . lan exceedingly high standard, and the . 1 benefit’ to : the boys could not be over- . 1 emphasised. Further visits to farms were , 1 in prospect. .On June 4 the school s eight I ’ courts were used by the Taranaki Bas- , ’ ketball Association for its annual King’s ■ ! Birthday tournament. The excellent coni dition of the courts was most favour- ; ably commented on. The school’s having so many courts available permitted , the playing of a “two life” tournament i for the first time. Enrolments in even- , ing classes had increased through the ’ transfer of free places by pupils of the . day school who had secured employIment. Through the co-operation of the ; instructo. (Mr. D. Squire (Hawera), Amelia Goldstone (Hawera), Eileen A. Fetzer' (Mahoenui), N. E. Coad (New Plymouth), M. I. Bacon (Kohuratahi), I Kathleen M. O’Grady (Mohaka).
