OKOKE QUEEN CARNIVAL

ENTERTAINMENT AT SCHOOL. A carnival in. aid of both queen carnival candidates (Miss June Mitchell and Miss Fay Smith) was held in the Okoke hall on Saturday owing to the weather being wet. Practically the whole of the district was present. The feature of the day was the procession of children in fancy dress with all their different kinds of rolling stock decorated for the occasion. The judges were Mesdames Phillips and Luxton, Waitoitoi, The prizes were: Decorated cycles, Bill Fraser 1, Peter Wright 2, Ray Potier 3; decorated tricycles, Rex Barham 1, Laurie McNiel 2, John Wright 3, Teddy Whittaker 4; decorated pram for girls under six years, Ina McLellan 1, Nancy Darke 2, Molly McLellan 3; over six years, Maureen Jones 1; decorated carte, Ethel Whittaker 1, Russell Barham and Lloyd Whittaker equal 2; whelbarrow, Neal Darke 1, Jock McLellan 2, Maurice Whittaker 3; dolls, Merle Whittaker and Neale Whittaker equal. Race results were: Boys over nine years, Ray Potier 1, Paddy Whittaker 2; boys under nine, Peter Wright 1, John Grylls 2; girls over nine, Merle Whittaker 1, Janet Wright 2; girls under nine, Esther Whittaker 1, Pauline Hargraves 2; tiny tote, girls, Ethel Whittaker 1, Molly McLellan 2; boys, Neal Darke 1, Laurie McNiel 2. Messrs. C. Barham and H. McLellan took charge of the races.

The judging of the cooking resulted in Mrs. C. V. Ekdahl gaining first prize for both sponge and sultana cakes and Mrs. A. Lord first for scones. •

After the judging was completed the prizewinners paraded and the prizes were presented by Mrs. Ekdahl. A stall was well patronised and there were games, competitions and sideshows. At the conclusion of the afternoon the votes secured by the candidates were counted, Fay Smith having received 1059 votes and June Mitchell 720 votes.

In the evening a dance was held to further swell the votes. Music was supplied by Mesdames H. Collingwood and H. McLellan, Messrs. A. Pepperell, W. Whittaker, J. Jones and F. West. Mr. H. McLellan was master of ceremonies. Monte Carlo dances were won by Mr. Carroll and Mrs. A. Smith and Mr. Geo. Hoskin and Mrs. H. Collingwood. Competitions resulted as follows: Cake made and presented by Mrs. C. V. Ekdahl, Mr. E. Bungay; artificial flowers presented by Mrs. Rogers, Mr. Bungay; afternoon tea cover presented by Mrs. Darke, Mrs. Albert Jones; cake presented by Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. H. Collingwood. General News.

A comi'ng-of-age party was given last week at the residence of Mr. J. C. M. Whittaker, Princess Street, _ Waitara, _in honour of Miss Alice Whittaker, Piko Road.

A combined euchre and bridge tournament held by the Okoke branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was very well attended. All available tables were required to accommodate the players. Euchre prizes were wbii by Mrs. Geo. Rogers and Mr. C. Lee and Mrs. F. M. Thessman and Mr. Gilbert Kenah won the bridge prizes. Music for a dance which followed was supplied by Mr. A. Smith, with extras by Mr. A. Pepperill. A competition for a cushion made and donated by Mrs. E. Whittaker, sen., was won by Mrs. J. Hoskin. At a recent meeting of the school committee it was decided to approach the Education Department through the Education Board to have the school conveyance running to the end of the metal oh Piko Road to pick up children who have about three miles of mud road to traverse. In the meantime Mr. T. Hoskin agreed to run the extra distance. ‘ The committee decided to supply cocoa to the children during the winter months, as has been the practice for several years past, Mr. Whittaker was again appointed to represent the school on the dental clinic committee at Waitara. _ A social evening was held at the residence of Mrs. Geo. Rogers, Lower Okoke Road, when about 30 people were present. The proceeds were in aid of the Okoke candidate in the carnival being held to raise funds for the Anglican Church in the district. The evening was spent in community singing, cards, competitions and other games, the prizes being won by Mrs. T. O’Riordah, Messrs. A. Lord, E. K. Blundell, A. E. Dennd, H. Grylls and Carroll. Rabbits, which were apparently making serious headway in the district about this time last year, seem to have disappeared, none having been seen lately and no signs being visible. Wild pigs in some places are doing much damage to pastures and fences. The school teacher, Mrs. Fitzgerald, attended a meeting at Urenul last Week convened to discuss the playing of interschool football and basketball among schools within about a two-mile radius of Urenui. It was decided to commence the matches on June 14, and they are to be arranged so that as far aS possible each school has the same amount of travelling to do with the exception of those schools who have no suitable playing area. Mrs. H. Grylls has returned from a visit to her mother in Western Australia. Mrs. A. E. Denne and Miss S. Marsh have returned from a motor tour. Mr. Arthur Jones, who was a patient in the New Plymouth. hospital, is home again. Mrs. F. M. Thessman, who has been visiting relatives in the valley, has returned to her home at Lower Hutt. Mr. and Mrs. H. F. McLellan have returned from a motor trip to Aria and Kopaki. They were accompanied by Mr. Albert Jones and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. E. McLellan, Aria, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Jones, Kopaki. Mr. J. Jones accompanied them on the return. Mr. and Mrs. W. Hargraves motored to Wellington during the school vacation. Miss Graham has been Staying With her sister, Mrs. R. Ekdahl, Piko Road. They are spending a few days at New Plymouth before Miss Graham returns to her home at Napier. Mrs. Vai Jones, Oteiroao, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. Fraser. Mrs. A. Jones, Midhirst, and Miss Molly Jones, Kaipikari, are visiting the district. Mrs. E. Whittaker, jun., is seriously indisposed at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Wellington, Waitui.
