TEACHERS AND ANZAC DAY

NON-ATTENDANCE AT "iSERVICE. COMPLAINT AT MATAMATA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, June 6. Because of what it deemed a “noticeable absence of teachers” from ceremonies held at Matamata on Anzac Day, the Matamata branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote to the Education Board to-day saying that if the teaching staff of a school did not have reasonable representation at a public service of such a kind the children could hardly be expected to profit by their example. The chairman of the board said the matter was somewhat difficult. Anzac Day was not a holiday, but a holy day. He did not know that the board could compel teachers to attend the Anzac observances, but the board expected all teachers to realise the place the day held in the public estimation. They should do all in their power to inculcate a proper reverence for the day. A member suggested that teachers be circularised, but others thought that might suggest compulsion, which was undesirable. The board will inform the Matamata R.S.A. of its attitude.
