WATER PATROL SCHEME

NORTHERN AUSTRALIA.

FLYING-BOATS AND LAUNCHES.

Proposals for the use of flying-boats and fast motor launohes *to patrol the coasts of Northern Australia and. NeW Guinea have been made to the Federal Ministry by a committee representing the departments of Defence, Interior and Health. The committee recommends that a flying-boat and a launch Should be stationed- at Darwin and at Rabaul and a launch at Thursday Island. Each craft would have a long cruising range and would be fitted with wireless. Thd Australian Air Force'would supply the personnel for the fiying-boats. • The proposals have been considered by the Cabinet, which has called for estimates o the cost. Expert advice is also being sbught oh the size and type of motor launches that would be needed. It is probable that the launches will be built at Cockatoo Island. The Darwin launch will be available for emergency use on the air mail route across the Timor Sea. I uMMbMiiriiiim
