The exact placing of the New Plymouth team, especially among the men, has not been determined and it is likely that matches will be played beforehand. The strongest man in the club is required to face N. Meuli, the visitor’s best (though now second) man, who is probably the best player in the province by a good margin.

By special arrangement the Defence Department has. made the hall available for the match oh Wednesday night. There will be nb play for. ordinary members, so that the matches Will be played on all-courts. As men’s and women’s singles and doubles and combined doubles will be played, it will need thorough organisation by the New Plymouth committee. Cup for Competition. Through the interest of Mr. “GuS” Brinsden, the noted Auckland golfer, a cup will be donated for inter-club competition in Taranaki. Mr. Brinsden, who was a champion tennis player in his day, was present at the New Plymouth club’s courts last week, and his appreciation of the facilities of-the club J were interesting, especially as he is familiar with most of the Auckland clubs. Ladder Matches. , Ladder, matches at the New Plymouth Club recently have resulted as follow: Miss Wylds beat Miss Welch 16-14; Miss Lobb beat Miss Hay tort 11-0; Miss Anderson beat Miss BrObker 11-9; Mrs.' Smith beat Miss Abraham 11-0; Purser beat Bennett 25-21; Lobb beat Strombom 21-19; Crawshaw beat Hutchinson 15-4; Holby beat Thomson 15-4; Allan beat F. White 15-7; Strombom beat Collinge 21-18; Allan beat Morgan 15-13; Little beat Allan 15-9; Skelton beat W. Griffiths 15-6; Blakeney beat Purser 21-10. Knotty Points. If the server in attempting to ’serve misses the shuttle altogether, it does not count as a fault; but if the shuttle is touched, no matter how slightly by. the racquet, a service is thereby delivered and the rules governing the service at once apply. \ . . If A is serving to B and the shuttle strikes or is struck ’by B’s partner, even if he is standing outside the court,, A scores an ace.' , A player who strikes the shuttle in play (unless he thereby makes a. good return) or is struck by it loses the stroke, no matter whether he is standing within the boundaries of the court or outside them. If in service the shuttle strikes the top of the net, and is then struck by the player served to, it is assumed that the shuttle would have fallen into the proper court. It is thus a “let” and a fault cannot be\ claimed. If in service or during a rally a shuttle after passing over the net is caught in or on the net it shall be a “let.” If during a rally, the shuttle falls into the net, or outside the court, and the striker then touches the net with his racquet or person, there is no penalty, as the shuttle Is not then in play. Kemp Beats Meuli.

Kemp took top place on the Hawera ladder on Monday, beating Meuli 15-9. Meuli was suffering from a very heavy cold, however, and cotlid not produce his best form, so that more interest will attach to a return match. What happened was that Meuli was in position a shade late for his smashes which came straight to Kemp, who, picked them up remarkably well. Winning smashes usually go wide on the forehand. West Coast Team.

None of the Hawera players was able to get a place in the West Coast team to play Wellington, Meuli, Kemp and Hewitt all being eliminated in the trials at Wanganui. The bulk of the team comes from Wanganui with the inclusion of Barnett, a brilliant player from Palmerston North. Hours of Play.

There will be no play on Monday night at the New Plymouth Club. A working bee will repaint the lines and fix up the courts. There will be the usual long night on Tuesday, and play on Thursday, but although the hall will be opened on Wednesday, there will be no play for ordinary members. On that night the courts will be in use for the first interclub match of the season against Hawera. Players at Waitara. Although several attempts to start badminton at Waitara have been made, all efforts have failed. Difficulties in securing a hall are the chief reason. At least half a dozen enthusiasts in the town, baulked of play locally have joined up with the New Plymouth Club as country members.
