BRASS AND PIPE BANDS

MEETING OF TARANAKI UNION. REPORT OF YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Brass and Pipe Band Union was held at Stratford last night, the president (Mr. P. Skoglund) presiding over an attendance of 17. The report and balance-sheet have been publishe’d in the News. In moving their adoption the chairman welcomed the delegates but expressed regret that more bands were not represented. Bands were having a hard time financially, and that accounted for the small entries at the annual contest at Manaia. The contest was, however, succesful and the Manaia committee was to be commended on the way it organised the contest and managed to balance the receipts and expenditure. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr. P. Thomson (Stratford); president, Mi-. P. Skoglund (Stratford); vice-presidents, five were elected; the appointment of a secretary was left to the incoming- committee; committee, Messrs. A. C.’ Morrison (Eltham Pipe Band), E. P. Aldridge (Stratford Pipe Band), A. Beasley (Eltham Brass Band), S. W. Whyte (Stratford Municipal Band), L. M. Fairbrother (Manaia Pipe Band).

Stratford’s request for the next contest was granted. . Messrs. J. J. Drew and E. Clothier were chosen adjudicators for the brass and pipe sections respectively at the contest.

The class of music for the B grade will be discussed at a general meeting, while that for the C grade will be own choice for the selection and march. “We will have to guard against the possibility of any bands using men who are not entitled to play for it and the B grade bands must not obtain players from outside the 12-miles radius,” said the chairman. “Taranaki started the fashion in provincial contests and it would be a pity if the contests were permitted to lapse through dissatisfaction with infringements of the rules.” Mr. H. Burmester, Stratford, who retired from the secretaryship,/was voted an honorarium of £5 5s and members paid tributes to his work in the past year.
