BRIXTON SOCIAL EVENING
ACTIVITIES OF THE DISTRICT. An evening was spent at Brixton last week when a number of neighbours and friends of Mr. and Mrs. L. Jury and family gathered at their new residence. Eight tables played euchre, prizes being won by Mrs. Higgens and Mr. J. Poletti. Mr. Limmer on behalf of those present presented to the jury family a clock in memory of the occasion. A kitchen evening held by the residents of Brixton in the Huirangi Hall on Saturday night in honour of Miss Jessie Muir was well attended, over 100 being present. Mr. W. McCaul was master of ceremonies. After supper Mr. E. Andrews spoke of the part Miss Muir took in the social affairs of the district She was a keen cricketer and for some years past taught the Brixton Sunday school. He asked Miss Muir to accept a table of gifts. Master N. Schroder, on behalf of past and present pupils of the Sunday school and their parents, pre-
seated the guest with a set of crystal goblets and a plate. On behalf of the Brixton ladies’ cricket team, the captain, Mrs. McCaul, presented two bronze jardinieres. Mr. H. Aitken replied on behalf of Miss Muir. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss M. Sutton and Mr. N. Denton. An extra was played played by Messrs T. Rowe, C. Watson and S. Summers. ’ There was a large attendance at the Brixton Cricket Club’s dance in the Huirangi Hall on Monday. Mr, L. Longstaff was master of ceremonies and Rowe’s Orchestra played the music. Euchre in charge of Messrs E. Andrews and W. McCaul was well patronised, 17 tables being engaged. Prizewinners were: Ladies, Mrs. McCaul 1, Mrs. Nicoll 2; men, Mr. O. Hoskin 1, R. Grant 1. Monte Carlo dances were won by Miss C. Fulton and W. McCaul, and Miss G. Andrews and Mr. N. Bint. Extras were played by Mrs. H. Giddy and Mr. R. Grant.
