MANAGEMENT OF RUGBY

COMPETITIONS IN TARANAKI. MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE. Waimate Football Club asked the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union on Wednesday night for a ruling whether a fourth grade player residing in a district where there was no fourth grade team could play for a neighbouring club. It was ’ decided that the player could not play outside his club boundaries. Mr. W. A. Guy: It is about time the boundaries were cut out. The chairman: That will probably happen some day. A member said the player was probably only a light ’ boy who would be cut put of football. The chairman said that on receipt of further particulars it might be possible to arrange some dispensation in the case of a particular player. Application for a percentage of the gate money derived from home matches for the junior teams was received from the Hawera club. It was stated that all southern clubs except Hawera benefit by gate money received from junior matches. The chairman said the same position applied at New Plymouth regarding the juniors. The refund of a portion of the gate money was for the benefit of the club and not for the senior team only. The allocation of gates was a matter for the annual meeting of delegates. A suggestion that the union allow clubs to insure teams, particularly in the 3rd and 4th grades, as a whole and not as individual players was received from the Hawera club. It was stated that players of those grades were finding it difficult to afford insurance. Two supporters of the club had guaranteed £3 for each team. It was a very generous action on the part of the guarantors, but the whole basis of the scheme was its individuality; under the present scheme the actual name of the player insured had to be registered, said the chairman. Mr. E. H. Young agreed that the basis of the whole scheme was the individual cover. Mr. K. C. Jury said the Tukapa club subsidised some of its junior grade insurance fees. It was resolved to express regret that the union could not accede to the request. INSURANCE REDUCTION. The Eltham club applied for a reduction of the insurance rate for fourth grade teams. “I think the Eltham request is one that can very well be considered at the next annual meeting, but for this year the union is committed to the present system,” said the chairman. Tlie Eltham club is to be advised accordingly. Empire Old Boys notified that owing to lack of players, it would be compelled to withdraw its junior team from the competition. Reinstatements were granted as follows: Senior to junior, J. Russell, J. Douglas and R. Ashton, Inglewood; A. Sutton, Clifton; R. Wallace, T. Guy, Okaiawa; R. Martin, P. Denham, Hawera. Junior to third, E. Andrews, Hawera. A cup for fourth grade competition had been donated to the Stratford club by Mr. A. R. Masters, an honorary member, stated the secretary of the club in a letter. The club asked the union’s confirmation of the following rules concerning the competition: (1) The cup to be called the A. R. Masters challenge cup for 4th grade competition and to be the property of the Stratford club; (2) the cup to be competed for by the 4th grade teams in the central division; 13) the winning team each year to add a small silver shield on it bearing the name of the winning club; (4) the cup to be deposited in the show case in the Stratford Municipal Buildings; (5) the team holding the cup or having the loan of it for special occasions shall be held responsible for the safe keeping and make application to the secretary of the Stratford club and the town clerk for it; (6) the cup shall be held for competition each year and cannot be won outright by any team. The union approved the conditions and thanked Mr. Masters for his gift. S. Garvey wrote stating that he had applied to Empire Old Boys for his transfer, but it had been declined. He resided 25 miles from Hawera and desired to play for the Hawera club. Empire Old Boys stated that the transfer had been declined on the grounds that it would weaken the club. They had invited the player to meet the executive at the meeting of the club. EVIDENCE REQUIRED. It was decided to ask Empire Old Boys to give evidence that the player had been selected this season, and that as the player lived 25 miles out of Hawera, he should be asked to meet the executive at a time convenient to himself. In view of the heavy programme of matches in the new few weeks it was decided to defer the playing of a representative trial match until just prior to the selection of the touring team. Mr. W. A. Guy was appointed manager of the team to visit Wanganui on the King’s Birthday. Mr. N. Frost was appointed refereg for the Taranaki v. Wanganui colts match at New Plymouth, and the appointment of a representative to look after the visiting team at New Plymouth was left in the hands of the New Plymouth representatives. The referees’ appointment board submitted the following names of referees to be forwarded to the New Zealand Rugby Union as eligible for representative matches: Messrs. A. E. Spratt, N. Frost, A. O’Sullivan, L. H. Clapham and F. J. Eggleton. An explanation of the unsatisfactory marking of the Urenui ground was received from the club, stating that as the ground was used for both Rugby and hockey no other arrangement was possible. ' A copy of the explanation is to be sent to the Referees’ Association, which it is expected will see that the football ground is in future marked by Hags at least.
