GREAT FOOTBALL RECORD

SIX ALL BLACKS PUPILS CENTRAL SCHOOL PRODUCTS. 56 REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS. The Central school, New Plymouth, has a great record in the football world, having turned out six All Blacks, Louis (Snip) Allen, Arthur Humphries, H. J. (Simon) Mynott, L. B. (Jack) Stohr, Charles Brown and Geo. Loveridge. Dr. E. F. Fookes represented England for four seasons, captained Yorkshire for four seasons, captained North of England (playing centre three-quarter) and represented Taranaki. Charles Brown also captained the touring New Zealand Expeditionary Forces fifteen. In the League game there were Arthur Hardgrave, Gordon (Babe) Hooker and Ernest Buckland in New Zealand representative games, while Hooker also captained Queensland against the first English League team which came to the colonies. Nine New Zealand representatives for both codes have therefore come from the school, while 56 old boys have played for Taranaki. T. Smith and G. Hooker represented Taranaki in both codes. Other -old boys have been prominent in provincial teams in other parts. Arch. McLean captained Rangitikei for two seasons. A unique record was established when two sons of L. Smith at different times captained the school team after their father in his day had also held the position. The popular “Tiger” Hopkins refereed for 22 years in the Rugby Union game.
