JUBILEE BALL SUCCESS

CENTRAL SCHOOL CELEBRATIONS. SPLENDID SUPPORT FROM PUBLIC. Had the Central School jubilee ball held at New Plymouth last night marked the conclusion of the jubilee week it must have been acclaimed a wonderful climax to a memorable programme. Coming as it did no more than part of the way through, it splendour was the more praiseworthy. Well over 1500 dancers in jubilee spirit filled the Coronation and Agricultural Halls, and thoroughly entered into the gay and carefree spirit of the celebration. The halls presented a striking picture as the hundreds of couples revolved on a perfect dancing floor to music by a jubilee orchestra. Loud-speakers carried the music from the Agricultural to the Coronation Hall. The entrance hall was lined with greenery, and a brightly coloured Old Boys’ Association stall and a refreshment buffet on one side and a long array of groups and scenes taken at practically every stage throughout the 50 years made an attractive display. The photographs were surrounded practically the whole evening by old boys and old girls, to whom personal acquaintance made for special interest. The grand march preceding the supper was led off by Mr. H. Dempsey and Mrs. S. Bennett, and the procession parading round the Coronation Hall presented an impressive spectacle. Supper was arranged in the supperroom adjoining, and the marshalling of the throng was in itself a great feat. Mr. T. Petty was marshal for the evening and the three sittings of supper were accommodated with a minimum of delay. Supper arrangements were in the hands of a very large band of helpers headed by Mrs. W. H. Huggett, and to them no small share of the success of the evening was due. Table decorations were arranged by Mr. D. Carter and helpers, the long tables being tastefully relieved with many shaded flowers. The ball was a striking tribute to the efficient organisation and the enthusiastic work of the special ball committee, of which Mr. W. H. Huggett was chairman. The committee owed a great deal, too, to many other helpers whose assistance materially aided smooth running.
