MAINTENANCE OF ROADS.

REPORT. OF COUNTY ENGINEER. The following report was presented yesterday to the meeting of the Stratford County Council by the engineer (Mr. J. W. Spence):— ■ . , , z North riding: During the period crushing of shellrock obtained from Mr.. Oldridge’s pit has been completed. The Stanley Road refacing has been finished, and maintenance metal has been distributed on various roads in the same locality Two days’ crushing was done at the railway depot, Midhirst, and the crushed stone has been placed^on the road sides for maintenance. The footpaths in the Midhirst township have been coated with shellrock screenmgs. General repair work has been done on most of the metalled roads in the riding. An old wooden culvert on the Derby Road has been replaced with a set of 18-inch concrete pipes. _ South riding: General maintenance works in the way of watertabling, metal patching and drain cleaning have been carried out on the following roads: Climie, Cheal, Cornwall, Mountain, Wingrove No. 2, Skinner, North and South. A start has been made with the refacing of the metalled portion of the Skinner South. . East riding: Metal patching, watertabling and fern cubing have been carried out on the Ohura, Wawiri, Ahuroa East and West, Oruru, Makuri, Gordon, Douglas North and South, Mangaehu No. 1 Mohakau and Akama Roads. Bitumen patching has been done on the Ohura and Beaconsfield Roads. West riding: The great portion of the period has been occupied at the Manaia Road pit, where 350 cubic yards of shingle have been put over the screens, from which 230 yards of screened shingle have been obtained. These will be used together with the finer rejects in building up the bitumen edges and reblinding several metalled roads. It has been found necessary to make considerable repairs to the Waingongoro Road. Metal patching has also been done on the Upper Palmer, Opunake No. 2 and Upper Rowan. ' Mangaehu riding: The grader has been run over the grass edges and the watertables cleaned out on the Mangaehu Main, Mangaehu North and South and Puniwhakau Roads. Metal patching has been done on the Mangaotuku and Mangaehu Main and the culverts on thes* roads are being attended to. 'Two and a-half yards of river shingle were placed on the approach to Mangaehu No. 2 bridge, which had subsided during the recent rains. A slip on the Ma* ngaehu North near Mr. Ford’s property has been partly cleared away; some timber work will be required to prevent further slip material from covering the r °Ngatimaru riding: A number of small slips has been cleared off the Junction, Matau North and. Mangaoapa Roads; the watertables have been attended to and fern and scrub have been cut. Repairs have been completed on the truss bridge on the Matau North.
