MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIA MEAD MAKES GOOD STAND ARNOLD DISMISSED AT 31 By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 1.20 a.m. London, May_ 23. The Australian cricketers opened their match against a strong county, Hampshire, this morning. Hampshire won t_.e toss and decided to bat, and at the luncheon adjournment had made J)3 at a cost of three wickets. The Australian team is: Brown, Bradman, Darling, McCabe, Bromley, Chip’ perfield, Oldfield, Fleetwood-Smith, Woodfull, Kippax, O'Reilly. Barnett is 12th man. Hampshire’s team is Lowndes (captain), Tennyson, R. H. Moore, Baring, Mead, Kennedy, Arnold,- Boyes, Me* Corkell, Creese, Pothecary., The weather is fine and the wicket is in good order. Despite the absence of fast bowlers, Wall suffering from a strained leg since the match at Lords and Ebeling suffering from a strained right arm, Australia began well. Hampshire opened in the presence of 8000 spectators. Hampshire soon lost Moore, who when the total was six was clean bowled in the third over by McCabe, who with Darling shared the attack. Arnold, who is an international Soccer player, and Pothecary, a left-handed player, batted freely, punishing Darlihg. Fleetwood’ Smith displaced Darling and obtained Pothecary’s wicket in his first over. Pothecary in attempting to sweep a full’ toss missed and lost his balance. The ball struck the calf of his leg and he was out l.b.w. . .. The veteran Mead started confidently. The scores are:— HAMPSHIRE. First Innings. Moore, b McCabe ! Batting first the courity eleven could gather only 151, and 175 in the second innings. Grimmett took seven for 39 and seven for 56. Australia replied with 334 (Bradman 19D. ~ . . The New Zealand-Hampshire match, of 1931 was drawn. New Zealand compiled 271 (Kerr 88) in its first strike, to which Hampshire replied with 190. Dempster hit up a brilliant 106 not out in New Zealand’s second innings and stumps were drawn, leaving New Zealand with four wickets down for 161. LARWOOD’S KNEE INJURY. good recovery REPORTED.
