THIRD YEAR IN SUCCESSION
CHAIRMANSHIP DECIDED BY LOT. OHURA COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS. For the third year in succession the chairmanship of the Ohura County Council has been decided by lot, Crs. G. Denison and J. Caird having on each occasion been the contestants. On the two previous occasions Cr. Denison won, but yesterday fortune favoured Cr. Caird, his name being drawn from the hat. ’ . . .... .... The retiring chairman congratulated Cr. Caird on his appointment. In acknowledging the congratulations Cr. Caird said the ratepayers were indebted to the retiring chairman, the treasurer and the engineer for the marked improvement in the finances. There had been an improvement of £3500 during the year and with the same policy of careful expenditure and judicious pressure on the ratepayers the council should soon be out of its difficulties. Re considered the personnel of the council should be increased by one because with six members, three from each riding, too much responsibility was thrown on the chairman, in having to give his casting vote. He hoped the position would improve shortly so that the council could show its appreciation of the work of th® staff by restoring part of the two “cuts.”
