HAWERA TRACK WORK
YESTERDAY MORNING’S WORK. HORSES FOR OTAKI AND AUCKLAND There was a little interesting fast work at Hawera yesterday morning, when several Otaki and Auckland candidates were given fast gallops. These made use of the trial grass, which is rather holding at present. Taitoru (Sheild) defeated Ruri (Feasey) by three-quarters of a length over six furlongs in Im. 19 3-ss. Taitoru is again working in fine style and it should not be long before he is back at his best. Ruri did not seem to hit out quite as well as usual. Now that Carfex is amiss and Havering has left the district Ruri is Hawera’s only representative in the important Cornwall- Handicap. It is not yet definitely certain whether the Surveyor gelding will take his place in the field for this event, but if he does he should not be disgraced.
Royal Peak (Grylls) covered half a mile unaccompanied in 52 l-ss. O. Cox decided against racing her at Bulls on Saturday, but she will more than likely be taken to Otaki.
Stanchion (Feasey) and Chief Line (Sheild) were associated in a working gallop over a round. Stanchion hit out very boldly, pulling hard throughout. Harvest Moon (Grindley) scampered over a couple of furlongs down the back stretch in 25 l-ss. He bowled along impressively, confirming the good reports to hand regarding the Acre gelding when trained at Feilding. Among others to be given useful pacework tasks were J. Fryer’s pair of two-year-olds Rollovant and Radiant Star, who have recently been recommissioned after a spell in the paddock. Both are in excellent fettle and should be in great trim for early spring racing. While it is being freely rumoured that Rollovant and Radiant Star as well as other members of this trainer’s team are to be taken to Australia for spring racing, Fryer stated yesterday that no plans have been definitely made and the trip is still “in the air.” Certainly he has by no means made a as to which members of his string will be taken in the event of his making the trip. Copey and Silk Sox are due to arrive back from Te Kuiti to-day. Chief Line, Onewhetu and Sandlark returned from Bulls on Monday. Although beaten, Chief Line was by no means disgraced in the hurdle event at Bulls on Saturday. He was well out from the rails most of the way, covering more ground than any of the other competitors. Even then he looked a likely winner turning into the straight but was carried out by Esteem approaching the last fence and appeared to be thrown off his balance. Hurdling has evidently made Chief Line more solid and the erstwhile disappointing Chief Ruler gelding now appears to at least pay hir. way over the battens. Onewhetu ran a fair race ■ considering that it was his first start, showing a good turn of pace during the early stages. He should be greatly benefited by the experience, and next time out can be relied upon to give a better account of himself.
Sandlark received a very poor passage throughout and entering the straight was at the tail of the field. He then put in a good run, passing several, but he could not reach the leading division. More handily placed earlier he might have been in the money. It came as a surprise to see Copey again fall at Te Kuiti on Saturday, for the little Marble Arch gelding is generally regarded as one of the safest steeplechase jumpers racing in the Dominion. At the time of his mishap Copey was going well and his prospects looked bright. He should be greatly improved by the racing and it should not be long before he returns to the winning list.
Silk Sox also gave a good account of himself, and he, too, should be a winner in the near future. He was competing against some really good class hacks at Te Kuiti and so should be placed to advantage at meetings in Taranaki.
