PROMINENT MAORI’S DEATH
WIDOW OF MR. THOMAS CARROLL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wairoa, Last Night The death occurred yesterday of a very old Resident, Mrs. Mako Carroll, relict of the late Mr. Thomas' Carroll, an early settler and a brother of Sir James Carroll. She was aged 78 years. Mrs. Carroll came from a notable Maori family on the east coast. She leaves two sons and one daughter. The sons are prominent farmers. One is Mr. A. T. Carroll, who is prominent on various local bodies in the • district and is chairman of the Wairoa Co-opera-tive Dairy Company and may assume the mantle of Sir Apirana Ngata, Native Minister, when the time comes for Sir Apirana to retire from politics. A daughter is married to Mr. George Ormond, x another prominent farmer of the district and a grandson of the late Hon. J. D. Ormond.
A tangi, which will be attended by representatives from all parts of the Talrawhaiti is now proceeding.
