FORGERY OF AUTHORITY
COLLECTIONS FOR ORPHANAGE. LARGE SUM OF MONEY OBTAINED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Feilindg, Last Night. Representing himself as authorised to collect donations for a Presbyterian orphanage and in support carrying a letter on orphanage paper with the correct signature, Albert Burton, alias Soutar, was before the Police Court charged with forgery and with being a rogue and a vagabond. The evidence showed that Burton had procured a genuine letter and had erased the body of the typewritten matter, leaving, the signature of the superintendent. He substituted other matter, thus representing his authority to collect. With this Burton had deceived a large number of business men and residents and collected a considerable sum during his operations, travelling by car over the Horowhenua, Manawatu and Feilding districts. He was arrested by Sergeant Angland last Thursday and while being questioned tried to destroy the letter with a lighted match. Burton was formally charged with forgery and pleaded guilty. He was committed to the Supreme Court sentence.
