JUNIOR RUGBY FOOTBALL

POSITIONS OF THE TEAMS. i REVIEW OF THE PERFORMANCES. / The results of games played in the central division junior Rugby competitions on Thursday conformed to expectations, none of the leaders being upset, though Old Boys was lucky to beat Stratford in the last minute of the match. Cardiff, by holding Midhirst to a draw, gained one point and reduced the number of teams which have not scored so far to two. Tariki was leading Old Boys and Pukengahu by one point till Thursday, when Tariki’s bye and the wins of the other two put them one ahead of Tariki, which Toko joined, also with four points but from three matches to Tariki’s two. Stratford, and Cardiff lead the third grade and as Cardiff routed Old Boys by 29 to nil the previous week the clash between the two top teams' so far will be interesting. The holidays and the postponment of the School-Old Boys fixture prevents clarification of the position for some time. Forfeits, have clouded the issue in the fourth grade in which School has a clear advantage of two points over Stratford. s.’ Old Boys junior was fortunate to beat Stratford considering that the pack, with the exception of Bonner, had a lazy day till about ten minutes after the second spell commenced. Stratford forwards, on the other hand, worked like demons throughout and during. Old Boys’ deciding burst fought back gallantly against bigger and heavier opponents. In the first half Stratford forwards were all oyer the Old Boys van and had Stratford backs combined judgment with eagerness -they would have scored at least two or three times, for the forwards gave them ample opportunity. Berg was the only back in the line inside the wings who showed any understanding of the elements of rearguard play and he did not get going till the second spell, when he played brilliantly. Another back who stood head and shoulders above the rest was F. Foley, the Stratford full-back. He was the smallest and lightest player on the field yet he,made a wonderful showing and in the last 20 minutes was often the sole arbiter of whether Old Boys went through or not. Calcott, playing in the same position for Old Boys, gave a sound exhibition and McCready at five-eighths was the Old Boys back who used his head most and was responsible for a fine clearance and a well engineered try. A member of the management committee of the Rugby Union and two or three other prominent men in Stratford’s football world elected to follow the game along the strip of no man’s land between the two fields. They found the referee was no respecter of persons, for he ordered them off the area in accordance with the standing rule. The points table is:—

SHOOTING SEASON EXTENDED. STRATFORD SOCIETY’S REQUEST. Advice that the Department of Internal Affairs had agreed to extend the shooting season in the Stratford Acclimatisation Society’s district from two months to the three months originally requested, was received yesterday by the Secretary (Mr. G. The periods granted now are those recommended by the council in the first place. The department granted a season extended only from May 1 to June 30. A protest was immediately lodged by the council of the. society and endorsed by license holders at the annual meeting.' Patrons of the Eltham talkies to-night and on Monday night will see two good feature pictures. The first, “Hot Saturday,” is a story of a girl who walked home from a Saturday night engagement. She finds the whole town massed against her for something of which she is innocent, and eventually learns that the best and simplest person among the whole lot is the man whom the town has called bad. Nancy Carroll has tLe role of the girl, and Cary Grant that ot the socalled “bad man.” Randolph Scott appears as a sweetheart who is too ready to believe scandal about her. The second, Zane Grey’s “Mysterious Rider,” latest of the noted author’s exciting western action-romances, is the story of a hard-riding, straight-shooting young westerner, who at the risk of his own life, exposes and quells ar attempt to swindle, his fellow ranchers out of their property and evict them from their homes.
