REQUEST FOR WOMEN POLICE

PROFESSOR’S WORDS RESENTED. MOTION BY PROTECTION SOCIETY. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A meeting of the Society for the Pro tection of Women and Children (Welling ton branch) in reply to remarks madi by Professor R. M. Algie, Auckland, con cerning the appointment,.of women polio passed the following resolutions to-day:-“That the Society for the Protection o Women and Children enters an emphati protest against the remarks of Professo; Algie on the subject of women police a coming from one who is not a social ser vice worker and as showing that he is ii complete ignorahce of the subject. “That the demand for the appointmen of these women in New Zealand be re. asserted on the following grounds: Tha the women social service workers of th< Dominion through their national council (representing several thousands u o: women) have asked for years for th< assistance of trained women police ii both preventive and remedial worl among young people and children; th< people who make this request are those who for many years have worked in < voluntary capacity among unfortunate and erring ones and are well aware oi their necessities; that women police ir London and other cities in England anc abroad are- being steadily increased a.< finances permit and that modern thoughl on the part of men as well as of womer is in the direction of that protection which can only be afforded by women. The society wishes to pay tribute to the police force of the Dominion but in common with other practical societies knows that there are certain branches of work which can only be done by women. The society deprecates the unbecoming remarks of Professor Algie regarding the motives which actuate women in asking for women police or for the power of sitting on juries, as the motives which inspire these requests are of the highest and involve a great degree of self sacrifice.”
