RISE IN DAIRY PRICES

REACTION TO STATE'S POLICY SEVERAL FACTORS OPERATING. APPRECIATION OF BOTH MARKETS. CONSUMPTION GOOD IN BRITAIN. He was surprised that the Government’s recent announcement had not resulted in an immediate rise in the dairy produce market, stated a dairy produce firm executive when his opinion was asked on the rise in the price of butter and cheese which has taken place in the week now closing. The greater disposition that was now felt in New Zealand to accept regulation of some kind, coupled with the Government’s declaration of its intention to co-operate with Great Britain in the disposal of New Zealand dairy produce, would have created a better atmosphere undoubtedly affecting the market favourably, he explained. It was surprising that the Government’s declaration and the changed tone of the industry had not had an earlier effect. From 69s to 70s on a slow market on April 19 last (66s to 68s at the same date in 1933) the butler market has gradually appreciated to 75s to 765, with the market firm and good demand. There is now more inquiry for cheese at 44s 6d for white and 43s 6d for coloured the price at April 19 being 42s to 42s 6d (white) and 41s 6d to 42s (coloured) on a quiet market, the corresponding 1933 figures being 37s to 38s and 43s to 45s respectively. Agents’ reports are as follows, with butter, cheese (white and coloured in that order) given respectively: New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency: 745, steady; 445, 43s 6d, firm. Henry A. Lane and Co. Ltd., Hawera: 75s to 765, firm with hardening tendency; 455, 445, firm with hardening tendency. Newton King Ltd. (R. and W. Davidson Ltd.): 745, 755, closing very firm; 44s 6d, 43s 6d to 445, closing very firm. Newton King Ltd. gives prices for last week and last year respectively as follows: Butter, 71s 6d to 735; 78s; cheese (white),.43s; 465; (coloured), 42s 6d; 525. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency’s last week prices are 71s'to 725; 425; 42s to 42s 6d respectively. The Press Association cable dated London, May 10, states that the butter market is firm with good demand. Danish, 84s to 86s; New Zealand choicest salted, 75s to 765; unsalted, 76s to 775; Australian, choicest salted, 745, unsalted 745. There is more inquiry for cheese.
