AUSTRALIA LEADING HOLLAND. EXTRAORDINARY CONFUSION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Amsterdam, May 10. In a tennis match between Australia and Holland Australia is leading by five matches to one. Timmer defeated Crawford, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Crawford's defeat was due to an extraordinary contretemps. Originally a fiveset match was arranged, to which the players agreed. When Timmer won the third set Crawford stayed at the end of the court. Timmer advanced, to the end to shake hands, at which Crawford was astonished to learn that the match was over. ■ ’
An inquiry revealed that an official told Timmer just before the match start/ ed that it had been, altered to three sets, but neglected to inform Crawford. Timmer was very tired, whereas Crawford had not exerted himself.
Club (England) is leading Japan by five matches to one. Tinkler defeated Miki, 6—l, 6—l.
