HAWERA HORSES’ FAILURE

ONLY ONE FIRST AT EGMONT. NOW PREPARING FOR WANGANUI. (By “Childers.”) Hawera horses fared very badly: at the Egmont meeting, securing only , one first, two seconds and two thirds and £155 in stakes. It is many years since they have done so badly, and in the light of recent good form their poor showings were unexpected. Ruri made an auspicious start in open company to win at his first attempt. Since J. Fryer bought him about two months ago the son of Surveyor has shown excellent form, having run two firsts and a second in four starts. Further victories should come his way shortly. T Carfex found the distance too short for him on the opening day, but .he ran his usual consistent race on Thursday. Now that the tracks are soft he should not remain long off the winning list. Richfield was a big disappointment, racing very sourly . both days. He jumped reasonably well,. although not quite as well as he. has done in his schooling tasks, and if he can be persuaded to’gallop more kindly he should not be long in making amends. Another whose failure was pronounced ■and rather unexpected was Gibraltar. During recent months he has been responsible for some really good efforts on the track but has failed repeatedly in his races. In most cases the hard state of the ground was advanced as the reason for his failure, but on Thursday, when it was generally expected he would be in his element, the big Lackham gelding, once again failed dismally. Investors are likely to shy clear of him in future unless he. does better soon. Argument ran a fair race each day and should be improved by the racing. He appears to be handily placed in the Trial Hack at Wanganui on Thursday and should run prominently. Silk .Sox made a bold showing on the opening day but was not at home in the heavy going on Thursday. The racing should benefit him considerably and it appears as if J. Fryer: has another, very smart hack in the handsome black gelding. Very few of the remaining Haweratrained horses impressed. Oriel ran quite a good race in his only start, while The Tiger and Chief Line made fair showings on the opening day. Easily the most outstanding failures of the meeting were those of Round Table, who ran an inglorious last each day. His form was obviously too bad to be

true, and evidently all was not right with him, although his track work..previously had been quite fair. When thoroughly fit again Round Table will prove himself a much better horse than his showings last week might. suggest him to be. Monaghan broke down the day before the opening of the . Egmont meeting and is to be turned out. As he is now rising 13 years it is unlikely that he will ever race again. WORK ON THE TRACKS. There was very little fast work at the tracks on Saturday morning, but a large number of Hawera and visiting horses were given steady pace work in preparation for the Wanganui meeting. The course proper was open for galloping, the going being very heavy. No pegs were up and the horses were sent a few feet out from the rails. Diagano (Robinson) finished in front of Gibraltar (Duncan) over half a mile in 525. Diagano does not seem to be as well at present as he was during the summer and early autumn. Cullus was responsible for a smart effort by leaving a similar distance behind in 50 3-ss. He was bleeding freely from the nose on pulling up. Gay Court moved in good style in a working gallop. Taitoru (Duncan) hit out boldly over three furlongs untimed. He now appears to have completely thrown off all signs of soreness, and provided everything goes satisfactorily with him in the interval he will take his place in the field for the Balgownie Hack at Wanganui on Thursday. Eight Hawera horses are to compete at Wanganui this week, while several have been nominated for the Te Kuiti and Rangitikei fixtures to be held next week.
