In the Eastbourne tennis championships, results are:— Men’s singles:—Third round: McGrath (Australia) defeated Hare (England), 6—4, 6—4, 6—3; Perry (England) defeated Malfroy (New Zealand) 6—4, 26, 6 —4, 6 —o; Crawford (Australia) ' defeated Fujikura (Japan) 6-1, 6—l, 9—7; Mika (Japan) defeated Turnbull (Australia) 11—9, 6—o, 6 —3; Quist (Australia) defeated Gandardower (India) 2—6, 6—2, 5—7, 6—3, 6—l; Boussus (France) defeated Hopman (Australia) 7_5, 6—3, 6—2. Fourth round: Prenn (Germany) defeated Avory (Ireland) 6—4, 6 —3, 6 —2. Women’s singles:—Third round: Miss M. Heeley (England) defeated Miss J. Hartigan (Australia) 6—2, 6—3. Women’s doubles: —First round: Mrs. Molesworth and Miss Hartigan defeated Miss McOstrich and Miss Whitmarsh (England) 8-6, 6—l. Third round: Mrs. Hopman and Miss Hardwick defeated Mrs. Lucas and Miss Harry 7—5, 4—6, 6—4. Men’s doubles:—Second round: Crawford and McGrath defeated Stedman (New Zealand) and Peters (England) 0«-3, 6—l, 4—6, 6—3; Fujikura and Hopman defeated Graves and Morris B—6, 6—3, 6—l; Quist and Turnbull defeated Wheatcroft and Wilde 6—3, 6—3. McGrath was supreme throughout the doubles match with perfectly timed double-handed back-hand shots. Stedman’s lobbing enabled him and his partner to take a set from ’Crawford and McGrath. Miss Hartigan failed to reproduce her Australian form. In the quarter finals of the singles Perry meets Miki, McGrath meets Kirby, Quist meets Prenn and Crawford meets Boussus. ■The News-Chronicle acclaims Hare as a great player, undoubtedly a worldbeater in the making. Hare recently scored a vistory over F. J. Perry, England’s number one ranking player, and has since competed prominently in tournaments.
