FROM FAIRWAY AND ROUGH

CHONG AND CONWAY IN FORM LEO QUIN RETURNS TO HIS BEST. GOLF THROUGHOUT THE PROVINCE (By “Stance.”) The golf season is in full swing throughout Taranaki and the courses are in good order. Scores are consequently improving and from all parts of the province during last week-end came reports of fine rounds. Handicappers must have had a busy time on Monday morning. A pleasing feature was the prominent part taken in the competitors by some of the younger players. Low Handicap Players Shine. At Waiwakaiho conditions were ideal, the greens especially being much improved. On the previous two Saturdays the low handicap men had not been sighted but on Saturday they had things all their own way. Chong was in great form and reeling off the first nine in 34 by flawless golf stood four up at the turn. He commenced the second half rather badly, taking six at the tenth, five at the eleventh and a four at the short twelfth. This reduced him to two up but a two at Moses and a three at the fifteenth gave him two wins. He halved the next two but failed to get his five at the last. His round of 74 has never been bettered in x competition play on the present course. It was equalled during the afternoon by A. E. Conway, who also showed a return to his best form. He took 38 to the turn, his only two* weak holes being the fifth, where he chipped poorly, and the eighth, where he required three putts. On. the return journey, however, he made no errors and playing all his clubs with his wellknown accuracy was home in 36, finishing two up on bogey. T. A. Thomson was playing well. Going out in 38 he stood two up at the turn. He halved the next two but the twelfth proved fatal, a loss resulting. However, he won the fifteenth and was still two up after playing the seventeenth, but the last cost him a six. His approximate stroke round was 79. H. P. Gray finished all square, while K. Ward, A. L. (Moore and N. D. Wilson with one down are still in the Medley Cup competition. The second and final round will be played on Saturday. v

Events at Fitzroy. The links at Fitzroy were in good condition at the week-end and the fairways will soon be in great order. Though the' sensational rounds of the previous week were missing, the scoring was again good. J. E. Carter and D. McKearney both returned nett 66’s, these being easily their best efforts to date. J. E. Medhurst is showing improved form and will soon do even better than his good card of 88—20 —68. W. Short and F. Gorrie had nett 69’s, while C. P. Grainger’s 86—16—70 showed that his fine round of the previous week was no flash in the pan. The following is the position in the Power, trophy with one round to play: C. P. Grainger 63—68—131; F. Gorrie 67-69-136; W. Short 70-69—139; W. H. Quickfall 71—73—144. 1

Young Players Prominent. A young player, L Wylds, collected the medal handicap at Eltham with the fine card of 83—14 —69. He did well at the tournament last year and will soon be playing from a lower mark. L. T. Quin demonstrated that he still knows how to wield a club by returning a fine gross 73, his best effort for some time. J. .Stewart, another promising youth, returned the fine card of 78—7—71. He is a long hitter who is expected to be in championship class shortly. The Eltham players are busy preparing for their annual tournament next month. Down the Coast. .

A limit handicap man, H. Donnelly, is-setting the rest a hard task in the Boyle Cup at Opunake. His card of 89—30—59 during the week-end was really good and he has only to repeat this form to keep the others very busy. T. Fouhy, G. Cundy, Father Kennedy, D. Eraser and L. Baker all did well, the gross of .74 by D. Fraser being a really good effort on. the course. It was the opening round of the event and three others have yet to be played. The Coastal club staged a successful opening on Saturday. Many visitors from other clubs were present and a mixed foursome was played over 14 holes. The club is drawing up a list of competitions for the season, which will soon be in full swing. The opening was concluded with a dance in the Pungarehu hall. Stratford Defeats Hawera.

Stratford, baulked of’ its match against Eltham by the weather on the previous week-end, entertained a fairly strong Hawera team on Sunday, and won 10 matches to Hawera’s five. The two top pairs came out evenly but the 3rd and 4th pairs of the Hawera team were-beat-en fairly decisively. Stratford won five games to three in the morning and five to two in the afternoon, one being squared. O’Callaghan and Whitehead were the only Hawera pair to do better in the afternoon than in the morning. Green and Anderson beat them five up and four in the morning round but had the tables turned four up and three in the afternoon. Bishop and Jones just got home on the last hole from Neal, and Morris in the morning but the Stratford pair had a margin of five holes on the 14 played in the afternoon. There were no wins larger.
